[GUIDE] Playing with your Keyboard 101Sat, 04. Dec. 2010 12:12 GMT

Hi :)

The names Hammer, and i'll be teaching you how to play with your keyboard and improving your elite gaming!



First of all, this is only directed at Desktop users since we will be using the NumPad allot.
Sorry to all the Laptop users, but ill update this thread with a link to a good laptop guide for key-bindings ;)


Lets start off shall we?



1.Introduction

Most MMORPG's, are Point & Click based, and although WoW can be played that way, its really not all that great to use...
First time i tried WoW, the very first thing i noticed, was the distinct freedom i had, it was new and amazing, i loved it :)
In most games like this, you dont have that, you click on a enemy NPC and your character runs to it and start attacking, should you try to move, the battle breaks, WoW doesn't have that, WoW gives you total freedom in fights, lets you move around, jump, evade, and all sort of things to get the upper hand.

So... using your mouse to cast a good spell rotation and still have enough awareness to move around in a chaotic fight, is just quite hard.

Hence the "Using your Keyboard Guide" :)

If you use your keyboard, you will be directing all the attention you were gonna give to your spell bar into the fight, making you quicker on your feet and making it easier to cast certain rotations in almost perfect sync :)



2.Hands and Keys

So, moving on to the good stuff!
This is just so we can start with the basics and move on from there.

Lets talk about hands! ...? :P

Your Left Hand is gonna be your "Movement Hand"
The hand you will be using to... well, move your character! hehe :)

Your right hand is gonna be your "Action Hand"
The hand you will be using to cast your spells and get the right targets!


Your left hand will be using the following keys:
A, S, D, Q, W, E, F, SPACE.

Your right hand will be using the following keys:
[NumPad] 0, ., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, +, -, /.



3.How and were to bind the keys

Well, about the how, i apologize guys, were i i'm right now i cant really log on and give you a set-by-step guide with all the correct names, i recommend you open up your WoW game manual and check out how its done.
If i get some time, i'll update this to cover that part with all the basic notions for you guys :)
It is not all that hard, not even for some one that doesn't really know about the subject, check it out, there is always a reset button for your keys in case you do something bad :)

Back to the good stuff!

You will be binding the NumPad keys to your Action/Spell bar.
This way, your hand will be kind of far apart, as if you were playing the piano :)

Oh!

In case your new at this, and wondering "What the hell is a NumPad?!", well bud, your NumPad is the big block of numbers on the right side of your keyboard, kinda looks like a calculator :)
Also to use your NumPad be sure to have the NumLock toggled on, this key is also part of the NumPad and in most - if not all - keyboards, has a little green light showing above that tells you if its on or off.


I say again... Back to the good stuff! :P

So, if you look down on your screen, you will see a line of 12 blocks, thats your action bar, and you will bind one of each NumPad key to a block, letting you use the spells that you put there by pressing a Key, instead of clicking it.

Alrighty then, this is how your binds should look like:

NumPad keys only
[ 1 ][ 2 ][ 3 ][ 4 ][ 5 ][ 6 ][ 7 ][ 8 ][ 9 ][ + ][ . ][ - ]
<--------------- ACTION BAR ------------------------->


If you can make each square bound to the NumPad keys i showed you, you have 90% of the work done and you on the way to a better gaming :)

"Dude! What about the "0" and the "/" keys?!"
Well these 2 have no place in the action bar.

If by this time you know how to bind your keys, bind "0" to Target nearest enemy and "/" to Walk/Run.

"0" is gonna be the most useful thing you will ever use, believe me.
"/" is more along the lines for Role Playing :)

On the left hand key binds, its already done, the movement keys are already bound wen you start playing the game, the only thing you will change there is the "F" key.
Bind the "F" key to "Auto run", this way, wen you need to take a long trip, just press it and you character will start moving forwards by its self, saving a bit of grind on your keyboard, poor guy, let him rest every now and then ;)
