patch deployment should be better preparedThu, 02. Feb. 2012 21:02 GMT

hello
this is what it happened to my yesterday the patch day.
one week before i had signed on my guild that i ll be raiding this Wednesday. i also arranged my program so to have time to raid and after i got home from work i logged in wow 40 min before raid time.
Patch started and i saw that 1.2 GB was to be downloaded! the play button was disabled.
I started the process and it took about 1 hour 15 min to the PLAY button to become enabled and total 3 hours and a half for full wow updated!!!
Asap i could play i logged but i was replaced and my spot was give to other, I expect loot from 1 st boss DS we kill heroic and it dropped this night only since we kill it either normal or last weeks heroic!!

So i lost my raid night, i lost my spot, my dkps and loot for what?

why all patch files were deployed only that day making players wait 1 hour to be able to log or 3 hours to update wow?

I see it as hastness, bad patch programming and lack of knowledge that ppl program to play wow an amount of time and not log to wait updates.
Questions that a developer i would like to answer:

a) Since patch was so big and we are not all having 24 mbit internet why developers didnt use the abilites they have in wow (donwload while play and download after exiting wow) during ALL previous week so that we download the parts of the patch and only download a last part say 100mb only on patch day?

b) how difficult is to post a message in chat the previous day and say
"patch size 1.2 gb "
"approx download time xxxx with 2 mbit"
"approx download time xxxx with 8 mbit" etc etc

so that we know how time we need so to log earlier and let computer download
Bad programming from top programmers

I see your point Rapidina, but patching is the fastest it has ever been now and the technology will continue to improve in Mists of Pandaria and beyond. We now have the background downloader, a streaming client, P2P and the file optimisation feature which are all designed to get you back in the game as soon as is possible when a patch is launched.

We also increase our Technical Support coverage on patch days to ensure that any issues a player experiences are dealt with as efficiently as they can be.

We can and will do better in the future, and I am sorry to hear that you paid so dearly due to your issues, but the total downtime for the masses yesterday was tiny compared to previous patches (it took me just under 20 minutes in total when I got home last night) and we are pleased with the way it went.

If you do have any constructive feedback on our patching procedure, you are welcome to share it with others in our General forum here:
